Treatment for veneer(s) is a cosmetic procedure to improve the shade, shape and appearance of teeth. This is accomplished by removing some of the enamel of the teeth so that a thin layer of porcelain can be bonded onto the visible parts of the teeth. As with any dental procedure, there are potential risks associated with veneers.

• These include but are not limited to the following:

  • Some of the enamel from the teeth will be removed and this may lead to post-operative sensitivity.
  • If the teeth remain sensitive, root canal treatment may be required.
  • Temporary restorations will be placed on the prepared teeth until such time the veneers are delivered. In some occasions, these temporaries may break or dislodge and thus, will require replacement. This may incur extra costs.
  • Some of the opposing teeth may be altered and therefore the bite may be altered as well.
  • During veneer preparation, the teeth may fracture, in which case crowns will have to be considered.
  • The veneers may chip, fracture and discolour in time. Sometimes, these cannot be repaired and will have to be replaced. Any repair or replacement will incur additional costs.
  • There is no guarantee as to how long the veneer(s) will last.
  • A mouth guard or occlusal splint is highly recommended to protect the veneers from bruxism (para-functional grinding of teeth during sleeping).
  • The final opportunity to make changes of the veneer(s) with regards to shape, fit, size and colour is prior to cementation. NO changes can be made after cementing the veneer(s). If after cementation you decide that you do not like the veneer(s), then additional costs will be incurred for the removal and replacement of the veneer(s).
  • Just like natural teeth, veneers need to be kept clean with proper oral hygiene and periodic professional cleanings. Otherwise, decay may develop underneath and/or around the margins of the restoration. Any further dental treatment and possible replacement will incur additional costs.

Composite veneers can be an alternative (in some cases) to porcelain veneers. They cost less and can be fabricated on the same day. They are generally quite aesthetic, but are not as durable as porcelain. – Some patients can improve the appearance of their teeth from simply bleaching and a slight amount of recontouring. In some cases, crowns may be an appropriate option.- Orthodontic treatment may be the better treatment option for crooked teeth but requires a time commitment of 1-2 years.
